Terms and conditions

Who we are

These terms govern the use of PapeleoYa and the purchase of its services. PapeleoYa is a trading name of DeadcowLabs, Inc. ("PapeleoYa", "we" or "us"). Our details are in the legal notice, and you can write to us at hola@papeleoya.com.

By placing an order you accept these terms. If you are a consumer, nothing in them limits the rights you have under consumer protection law.

How sworn translation works

PapeleoYa is a marketplace that connects customers with independent sworn translators and interpreters appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation (MAEC).

  • The sworn translation is carried out, signed and certified by the sworn translator assigned to your order, who is independent of PapeleoYa and responsible for its content under the rules of the profession.
  • PapeleoYa sells the service, collects the payment and issues you the receipt or invoice as the merchant that settles the transaction, because the payment platform we use requires this for a US company.
  • The translator receives 75% of the net price (excluding VAT); PapeleoYa keeps the remaining 25% as its platform fee.

The price is calculated instantly from the language, number of pages and urgency, and includes VAT and the translation of the apostille. The delivery time is shown before you pay. You will receive the translation as a PDF bearing the translator's qualified electronic signature.

You are responsible for making sure the documents you upload are legible, complete and your own, or that you are authorised to handle them.

Personalised checklists

Checklists (€29, VAT included) are generated by rules from your answers and the published regulations. They are general information, not legal advice, and do not replace advice from a professional who looks at your case. Their results depend on the accuracy of your answers. The authorities may ask for additional documents or interpret the requirements differently.

Right of withdrawal

As a consumer you generally have a 14-day right of withdrawal. Two exceptions matter here:

  • Checklists are digital content delivered immediately. Before you pay, we ask for your express consent to receive it straight away and for your acknowledgement that you therefore lose the right of withdrawal (art. 103.m of the Spanish consolidated General Law for the Protection of Consumers and Users).
  • Translations: the right of withdrawal ends once the service has been fully performed, provided it began with your prior express consent and your acknowledgement that you would lose the right once it was complete. If you withdraw before the translator finishes, we may deduct a proportionate amount for the work already done.

To withdraw, email hola@papeleoya.com with your order number.

Refunds and corrections

  • Full refund if no translator accepts your order within the promised time, or if for any reason we cannot deliver it.
  • Free correction of translation errors (for example misspelt names or wrong dates or figures). Tell us what is wrong and the translator will issue a corrected version.
  • Once a correct translation or a checklist has been delivered, there is no refund except for defects in the service.

If an office rejects a translation for a reason attributable to it (for example, a translator's mistake), we will correct it free of charge. We are not responsible for rejections caused by the original document, its apostille or other requirements of the procedure.

Professional directory

The directory of lawyers and gestorías is an advertising service:

  • Professionals pay a flat subscription of €49 per month.
  • Their listings are labelled "Publicidad" (advertising), in line with article 6 of the Spanish Bar Code of Conduct (Código Deontológico de la Abogacía Española).
  • PapeleoYa charges no per-client commission, takes no share of the professional's fees and does not refer clients in exchange for payment.
  • Each professional is solely responsible for the services they provide and the information they publish.
  • The subscription can be cancelled at any time and stops renewing at the end of the paid period.

Any relationship between a user and a professional in the directory is entered into directly between them.

Acceptable use

You may not use the service to translate forged or altered documents, for unlawful purposes, or to upload other people's documents without authorisation. We may cancel and refund an order if we detect misuse.

Liability

We are responsible for the proper functioning of the platform and the handling of your order. The content of each sworn translation is the responsibility of the translator who signs it. We are not liable for decisions made by the authorities or for indirect loss, except where the law does not allow this limitation.

Data protection

We process your data in accordance with our privacy policy.

Governing law and complaints

These terms are governed by Spanish law. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory rules of your country of residence and may bring proceedings in the courts where you live. Before making a formal complaint, please write to hola@papeleoya.com: we aim to resolve any issue within a few days.
